The Real Question Isn't "Which AI Is Best" — It's "Best for What, Given What You Already Run"
CFOs researching AI tools run into the same four names repeatedly: Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot. Vendor content tends to declare one a winner. In practice, the honest answer splits along two lines that matter more than benchmark scores: what analytical work you're doing, and what you're already licensed for. This page covers both, plainly, including where our own Claude-built site's tools fit and don't fit.
By Existing Stack: The Decision Most CFOs Actually Face
| If you're on... | The default pick is | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 (Excel, Outlook, Teams) | Copilot | Already licensed and embedded directly in the tools you work in daily — no separate login or context-switching. |
| Google Workspace (Sheets, Docs, Gmail) | Gemini | Same logic as Copilot, for the Google side — included in your license, embedded where you already work. |
| Neither, or doing the analytical heavy lifting separately | Claude or ChatGPT | Standalone tools chosen on reasoning quality and document handling rather than office-suite integration. |
This isn't a Claude-first framing for its own sake — it's what the practitioner guides and consultant content we reviewed converge on independently. The stack question usually gets answered before the model-quality question even comes up.

Where the "Fastest-Growing" Claims Fall Apart
Searching this topic, you'll run into a specific, repeated claim: that Gemini is "the fastest-growing finance AI tool," usually cited to Gartner. We checked this directly against Gartner's own newsroom material and found no such ranking — Gartner's actual published survey describes finance AI adoption generically (around 59% of finance functions using AI in some form), with no brand-specific growth ranking at all. The claim appears to originate from a vendor blog, not from Gartner. We're flagging it because it's exactly the kind of unsourced stat that circulates in this space and gets repeated uncritically — including, potentially, by us if we weren't checking.
What's Actually Driving CFOs to Search This
Job-market data is a cleaner signal than brand-comparison blogs. Datarails' analysis of CFO and FP&A job listings found mentions of "AI" in CFO postings rose from roughly 8% to 27% year-over-year, and FP&A listings citing AI competency rose from 14% to 35%. Notably, almost none of that hiring language names a specific model — employers are hiring for AI fluency as a category, not for ChatGPT-specific or Claude-specific skill. That's consistent with what we found researching this page: real, growing interest in "AI for CFO" broadly, with brand preference mostly settled by whatever office suite the company already runs.
Practical Decision Framework
- Already standardized on Microsoft 365: Start with Copilot for inbox/Excel-embedded work. Add Claude or ChatGPT separately for the heavier analytical lift — long-document review, board deck synthesis — where a standalone tool's reasoning depth matters more than integration.
- Already standardized on Google Workspace: Same logic with Gemini as your embedded default, Claude/ChatGPT as the standalone analytical layer.
- Neither, or evaluating from scratch: Claude and ChatGPT are the two to pilot head-to-head on your actual documents — a 10-K, a credit agreement, last quarter's board deck — rather than trusting either vendor's own benchmark claims.
- Regulated disclosure, guidance, or investor-facing material: No tool on this list replaces CFO and legal sign-off. Treat every output as a draft requiring human review against Reg FD, Reg S-K, and applicable securities law, regardless of which AI produced it.
Disclosure: FinSkilz is built on Claude / Anthropic's API. We've tried to represent the Copilot- and Gemini-favorable stack arguments accurately rather than defaulting to a Claude-first framing — for CFOs already standardized on Microsoft or Google, the embedded tool is usually the right starting point, not Claude. No AI output should be the sole basis for a disclosure, guidance, or financial-reporting decision.
